Synopsis: Kendra Morris's anachronistic yet eternally cool new album, "I Am What I'm Waiting For"! A vibrant, diverse, and highly individual masterpiece combining raw, powerful vocals with arrangements that defy her extensive record collection and whimsical intuition for delightful noise! ??Kendra Morris, a Florida native and New York-based singer-songwriter, has been seen as a post-Amy Winehouse or described as a modern-day Janis Joplin. Following her previous album "Nine Lives," this new album is released on Karma Chief, a subsidiary of Coalmine, one of the most noteworthy soul/funk labels today. Co-produced with Tobit Schwartz aka Little Shalimar (Run the Jewels), the album playfully reinterprets all elements of rock and roll?the audacity and elegance of Ronnie Spector, the acid sensibility of the garage psychedelic compilation "Nuggets," a postmodern reinterpretation of mid-20th century exotica, and the cracked snare and saccharine urbanism of ESG?while offering moments of vulnerable insight gleaned from a life dedicated to the pursuit of creativity. In the bell-ringing "Dominoes," the commonplace conflicts of family and cohabitation are contrasted with the Ronettes' signature voice of time, and in the exotica-tinged "All Your Jokes," Morris examines what he calls "the need for vulnerability in relationships when there is something to lose." There's also the smoky, doo-wop-tinged "Birthday Song," a brave attempt to expand the norms of birthday songs. Almost like a title track, "What Are You Waiting For" encapsulates the spirit of this album. The guitar riffs transform into a breakdown of sirens and bongos as Morris speaks of reality and independence. "I Am What I'm Waiting For" boldly utilizes small details. This is a rare record that doubles as a self-portrait, raw and yet thrilling because of its imperfections. Media reviews and more: "I Am What I'm Waiting For" is an anachronistic and eternally cool new album from the anachronistic Kendra Morris! A vibrant, diverse, and individualistic masterpiece combining raw, powerful vocals with arrangements that defy her extensive record collection and whimsical intuition for delightful noise! ??(C)RS
