Jackie Ross (born in St. Louis), a Chicago female singer who was scouted by Sam Cooke and debuted in 1962 on his SAR Records, and later sang in Syl Johnson's band, signed with the prestigious Chess Records in 1964, releasing the hit song "Selfish One." She later released albums on Brunswick and other labels, and this album was produced by the talented Chicago producer James Van Lear and released on his Golden Ear Records in 1980. From the supremely comfortable modern crossover soul track "The World Needs More People Like You" to the groovy upbeat "I Who Have Nothing," a cover of The O'Jays' "You Got Your Hooks In Me," and a cover of The Stylistics' famous "Betcha By Golly Wow" (which surprisingly uses the exact same backing track as the Chicago Lovelights version), this album is incredibly rich in content, from upbeats to slows!
