Featuring a stellar lineup including Nate Smith, Bill Frisell, and Bernice Travis! "Alive With Ghosts Today" is a new suite by Chris Potter, inspired by the story of abolitionist John Brown. Potter, widely regarded as one of the most influential improvisationalists and composers in contemporary jazz, takes the Harpers Ferry storming of 1859 as his subject. This event was a historical moment that revealed the contradictions, violence, and ideals at the heart of the American nation. Using this story as a starting point, Potter explores belief, sacrifice, and the unresolved tensions that continue to linger in American society. Stepping into a raw, American sound world shaped by blues, folk, harmonies reminiscent of Aaron Copland, and the driving force of rhythms that permeate American history, this ensemble aims to create a rich, individual sound like a "small town band," despite its limited instrumentation. The lineup consists of guitar, bass, drums, violin, clarinet, and trombone. Bill Frisell's guitar plays the emotional heart of the music, embodying the texture and warmth that Potter envisioned when composing. Nate Smith and Bernice Travis support the pulsating rhythm of the music with their heavy grooves. Sarah Caswell's violin moves freely between the transparency of classical music and the rawness of the fiddle. Furthermore, Lane Moore on clarinet and Zekkelya El-Maghabel on trombone shape the contours of the music with their unique colors, transforming the score into a living, human sound. The collective sound of these musicians gives this suite its form and power. Media reviews and more: The latest work from Chris Potter, one of the most important figures in contemporary jazz!
