"Ladeiras De Santa Teresa" is the debut collaboration album by Antonio Neves, an unconventional figure in the jazz scene of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Thiaguinho Silva, a percussionist who is also a Carioca (Rio native). It is a groove-filled work that fuses traditional samba with the deep Afro-Brazilian music that is its root, and the frenzy and elegant and powerful brass sound of samba jazz. Antonio Neves has been active as a trombonist and drummer since receiving high praise for his album "A Pegada Agora E Esssa," released in 2021, and continues to be a central figure in the international Brazilian music scene. In addition to his own works, he has also participated in albums such as Ana Frango El?trico's "Little Electric Chicken Heart," Bruno Belli's "No Reino Dos Afetos 2," and Barra Dezejo's "Sim Sim Sim." Like his father Eduardo Neves, he is an indispensable presence as one of the leading instrumentalists in Rio's music scene, where tradition and innovation intertwine. Thiaguinho Silva, on the other hand, is the son of percussion legend Robertinho Silva. Robertinho, known for his Afro-Brazilian-influenced playing rooted in jazz idioms, has participated in numerous albums including Arthur Verocai's "Arthur Verocai" (1972), Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges' "Clube da Esquina" (1972), and Gal Costa's "India" (1973), as well as his own highly acclaimed works on labels such as Carmo and the Philips MPBC series. His son, Thiaguinho, has also collaborated with Marcelo D2, Gal Costa, Rinikel, and Alicy Caymmi. Listening to this album, "Ladeiras De Santa Teresa," it's clear that he, as the successor to the Silva family, is carrying on the rich tradition of Brazilian instrumental music. The album opens with "Das Neves," which was also included on the Rio de Janeiro-themed compilation "Hidden Waters," released by Mr Bongo in 2023. This track, a masterful fusion of the fiery brass section of the Neves brothers, Edu and Antonio (who have also collaborated with Hermeto Pascoal), the elegant piano of Luis Ot?vio (who has also participated in Dora Morelenbaum's works), and Thiaguinho's pulsating samba break, possesses a richness reminiscent of Edison Machado's combo resurrected in the modern era. At the same time, it firmly conveys a contemporary spirit, leaving a strong impression that makes you want to hear more.
