Nestled quietly beyond a cast-iron gate in the hustle and bustle of Rio de Janeiro's Catete district lies a small alleyway. At its end is Baiho Saavedra. Surrounded by neocolonial houses, Fabiano do Nascimento, one of the leading contemporary Brazilian guitarists, spent much of his childhood in its courtyard. Built in 1928, this tranquil residential area, characterized by its wooden shutters, tiled floors, and quiet benches, inspired the title of Fabiano's new album, 'Vila'. This album marks Fabiano's first collaboration with a 16-piece orchestra led by trombonist and arranger Vitor Santos since "Lendas," released on Now-Again. Like the eclecticism found in the architecture in which Fabiano grew up, it possesses a scale that spans multiple worlds. As a Brazilian acoustic guitar master, he has collaborated with artists such as Arthur Verocai, Airto Moreira, and I?bere Zvargui, while also performing with artists like Sam Gendel and Carlos Ni?o in the Los Angeles jazz and experimental music scene. Vitor Santos, on the other hand, is an arranger and trombonist, a leading figure in contemporary Brazilian music who has collaborated with a wide range of Brazilian music giants including Jo?o Donato, Marcos Valle, Toninho Horta, and Elsa Soares. Recorded in Rio de Janeiro and Los Angeles, 'Vila' is grand, gentle, warm, playful, and imbued with a nostalgic atmosphere. In this remarkably ambitious work, Fabiano's delicate guitar melodies, at the heart of the mix, are swirled in all directions by Vitor's breathtaking orchestral arrangements, which celebrate, question, respond to, and engage in a constant dialogue.
