This album is a compelling live recording of John Coltrane, featuring three tracks carefully selected from a performance at the Village Vanguard, a sacred place for jazz. In particular, you will be overwhelmed by "Chasin' the Train," in which Coltrane plays nonstop for 16 minutes. The improvisation that continues without an intro or theme is tremendous. The backing band consists only of Garrison and Elvin, who are participating in the band for the first time. Each track features a different arrangement, including "Spiritual," which features guest appearances by Dolphy, and the modal "As Fresh as the Morning Sun" performed by a quartet.
