This is the final album by the first incarnation of King Crimson, which restarted with only Mel Collins remaining from the previous album, Ian Wallace on drums, and Boz Burrell, who participated as a vocalist, on bass. Although the album was created in an unsettling mood with the conflict between Fripp and Pete Sinfield becoming apparent, it includes memorable tracks such as "Islands," the ultimate ballad that refines the hard-edged beauty presented in the previous album "Lizard," "Sailor's Tale," which shows the powerful jazz-rock that is reminiscent of King Crimson from "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" onwards, "Letters," which depicts a chilling psychological drama that unfolds in an unsettling mood, and "Ladies of the Road," a twisted pop song that is unusual even among their early works. This album, the first since the original King Crimson, was created by touring and bringing the songs together, resulting in a style drastically different from the previous album which was built entirely in the studio. It stands out as a unique and distinctive work among all of King Crimson's studio albums. After the album's release, Fripp declared the band's dissolution during rehearsals for their second North American tour, but after being persuaded by management to complete the scheduled dates, they toured from February to April 1972, from which the live album "Earthbound" was produced.
