Flippertronics began with its introduction to a collaborative work with Brian Eno. Using two Revox tape recorders and various effects pedals, the system created sound loops and drone sounds, becoming the prototype for today's soundscape. Flippertronics made a leap forward during his time in New York in the late 70s, when he was engaged in free-spirited production and session work. 1981, when this album was recorded, was the time when he received a revelatory flash of inspiration during the final stages of The League of Gentlemen's live tour, and began the path to King Crimson's revival. This can be seen as a culmination of Robert Fripp's time in New York, and it captures a breathtaking performance from a period when he overcame the equipment troubles inherent in analog equipment and was able to control Flippertronics even in live settings. The Japanese edition adopts the SHM-CD format to maximize the potential of the stereo CD master mixed by David Singleton from the original open-reel tapes. From the faint sounds in the silence to the climactic moments that shake the cathedral, the sound recorded on the CD master is faithfully reproduced.
