In 1923, he joined King Oliver's orchestra and made his first recording. Later, he formed his own band, the Hot Five, in Chicago. He made numerous recordings and achieved worldwide popularity, including European tours. In the 1950s, songs like "La Vie en Rose" and "Kiss of Fire" became hits. In 1967, he released the global hit "What a Wonderful World." His highly technical trumpet playing and soft, husky vocals and scat singing were loved by many. He visited Japan three times: in 1953, 1963, and 1964. He died on July 6, 1971, at the age of 69.
