This was the band's 11th album, created with the aim of capturing the "classic Queen sound" that fans craved—a reaction to the somewhat avant-garde nature of their previous release, *Hot Space*. The band members' solo projects had provided a refreshing change of pace, resulting in an album infused with a fresh, pop sensibility. Roger Taylor’s "Radio Ga Ga" created a powerful sense of unity, with the music video's choreography becoming a staple of their live shows, while John Deacon’s "I Want to Break Free" was embraced as a passionate anthem for the liberation of the oppressed. With other tracks like Freddie Mercury’s "It's a Hard Life" and Brian May’s "Hammer to Fall" also released as singles, the album struck a perfect balance.
The bonus EP features six tracks, including single B-sides, alternate mixes, the Queen Christmas song "Thank God It's Christmas," and live recordings from the *Rock in Rio* festival in January 1985.
