This is the third volume of the epic project to collect all of The Rolling Stones' recordings. From the completion of "Tell Me" during the final recording of their first album, "THE ROLLING STONES," on February 24, 1964, to the emotional recording sessions at the legendary Chess Studios in Chicago during their first US tour, this volume thoroughly covers all recordings from those four months, including alternate versions and unreleased tracks. The debut album followed the original plan, focusing on rock and roll and blues covers. The Stones proved their existence as described by their manager, Andrew Oldham, inscribed on the album cover: "The Rolling Stones are not just a group, they are a way of life." The original song written by Jagger & Richards, "Tell Me," was also completed in time. The album also includes the legendary early version of "Tell Me," which was mistakenly included on the first pressing. In March, Mick and Keith recorded a demo of "As Tears Go By," a song they wrote for Marianne Faithfull. It's an early version with slightly different lyrics and chord progressions. While struggling to write their own songs for the Stones, Keith found success with the 12-string acoustic guitar sound on "Congratulations" and "Good Times Bad Times." Their first US tour in June was a commercial failure, but they achieved their dream of recording at the Chicago Chess Studios. In the studio used by Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry, they recorded 15 songs in two days, including "It's All Over Now," which would become their first UK No. 1 hit. This experience gave the Stones a huge boost of confidence. The album also includes previously unreleased tracks from that session, such as "Stewed And Keefed," featuring Stu's piano and Keith's guitar, and "Down In The Bottom," with Brian's slide guitar wailing. The twin guitar work of Keith and Brian on "Hi-Heel Sneakers" is fantastic. Their cover of Big Bill Broonzy's "Tell Me Baby" is likely a rendition of Muddy Waters' version. Some fans might remember it being quietly included in a 4-LP box set from West Germany's Decca in the 80s, but it's now happily available on CD. All five previously unreleased tracks from Chess Studios are included here. The liner notes, which detail the Stones' journey along with explanations of the tracks, can also be enjoyed as a story about the Stones.
