In 1963, Bob Dylan appeared at the major folk event, the NEWPORT FOLK FES, singing protest songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind," "The Humble Foot Soldier," and "God's On My Side," instantly becoming a new leader in the folk world. The United States, the land of the free, was in turmoil. Racial discrimination against Black people persisted, and the Vietnam War raged. In this era, Dylan and Joan Baez, the "princess of modern folk," became icons of the time, participating in the Civil Rights Movement and the March on Washington. The first track on the CD is a rare, previously unreleased recording of "Playboys and Playgirls," a live performance with Pete Seeger. This song, written by Dylan, was sung as a theme song at folk gatherings in Japan by the Folk Campers, who were the spark for the Shinjuku Folk Guerrilla movement, but it had never been officially released by Bob Dylan himself. Then, his duet with Joan Baez on the anti-war song "God is on our side" resonated with the audience. A year later, in 1964, Dylan began to showcase new songs with vivid, literary imagery and continuous rhymes, such as "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Liberty Bell." Dylan's transformation didn't stop there. The following year, in 1965, he performed a loud, electric live show with a rock band without any prior notice, which resulted in a storm of boos from the bewildered folk audience, causing him to walk off stage midway through. Returning to the stage with an acoustic guitar in hand, Dylan sang "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"?it's all over now?and broke away from the folk audience?or rather, from his past self.
