In the early days, the Stones, at the behest of their shrewd manager Andrew Oldham, recorded singles and LPs at multiple recording studios including Decca Studios, Regent Studios, Chess Studios in the US, and RCA Studios in the US. At the time, mono mixes were the mainstream, and stereo mixes were often not released on singles. In addition, perhaps due to the label's stance of generally only releasing mono versions of singles, the current catalog of albums, remastered in the CD era, is a chaotic mix of mono and stereo versions, a situation that remains unresolved. However, stereo-mixed masters exist for singles like "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?" and "The Last Time," which have never been released in stereo, and these are all included in this release. Furthermore, when the album was released on CD in 2002, some of the stereo masters for songs like "Around The Around" and "Confessin' The Blues" had an unbelievable flaw where the sound was distorted at the beginning of the song. This release uses a master without that flaw, fulfilling the wishes of long-time fans. What's truly amazing is the incredible sound quality. You'll be surprised by the quality, which even surpasses the official sound quality. You'll only truly understand why Brian's acoustic guitar is essential to Keith's fuzz intro on "Satisfaction" when you hear the stereo mix. The current mix of "Mother in the Shadow," which even the band members themselves were dissatisfied with, is best appreciated in stereo. In "19th Nervous Breakdown," Brian May layers a Bo Diddley-esque bass riff over Keith's acoustic guitar intro, and this is clearly audible in the stereo version with its left and right channels separated. In "As Tears Go By," Mick sings simply over Keith's acoustic guitar, and halfway through, the strings spread to the left and right, creating a soundscape that is sure to bring tears to the eyes of fans. This is the lost "ultimate stereo master" of the early Stones, and something that true fans should definitely enjoy.
