Bruce Springsteen formed the band The Castiles in his hometown of New Jersey while he was a student. They started playing at parties and eventually began performing at local clubs. This album collects early recordings of B. Springsteen from that period. First, at age 16, he met singer and guitarist George Tayce and began writing lyrics and composing music together. Then, on May 18, 1966, they made their first recording as The Castiles at Mr. Music Studio in their hometown. They recorded two songs: the original "Baby I" and "That's What You Get". In 2016, only "Baby I" was released along with BOSS's first autobiography, mastered by Bob Ludwig, but here both songs are included in their original recording form. Like John and Paul of the Beatles, Bruce and G. Teys share vocals on "Baby I." The Byrds-esque 12-string guitar sound of "That's What You Get" foreshadows the rock and roll songs on their later album, "River." A year later, they continued to play at New York's long-established "Caf? Whaa?" and other venues, rapidly improving their skills. This recording also includes two live performances (three stages) from September 1967 at their local club, "Left Foot." This year was a period of rapid change in the music world, and they moved beyond the popularity of the Beatles and Byrds to select songs that reflect the psychedelic era. Bruce sings and plays guitar in the style of Jimi Hendrix on "Purple Haze" and "Fire," and the sophisticated cover songs by Paul Butterfield and Sam & Dave are likely to be Bruce's favorites. His partner, G. Tass, sings songs by The Kinks, The Animals, and a psychedelic arrangement of The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby." There are also selections that are typical of high school students, such as The Who's "My Generation," which starts with howling noise, but their cover of Moby Grape's "Omaha" has a Detroit rock feel that brings to mind the E Street Band. After Bruce sings Leonard Cohen's signature song "Suzanne," the girls cheer. "Mr. Jones," written by organist Bob Alfano, and "Look into My Window," a legendary collaboration between Bruce and Tass, are particularly precious as they seem to have been performed only once. The sound quality of the master recording, made by an amateur, is what it is, but we should be grateful that it has been preserved in this way. This is a precious live performance at the very starting point where passionate talent runs towards the "future of rock and roll."
