Contents: This album is packed with the charm of Josh White, a song star who garnered immense support from white intellectuals. Josh White (1914-69), from South Carolina, was a leading figure in East Coast blues. Like other bluesmen from the region, he was a song star with a wide repertoire ranging from blues to gospel and ballads of British origin. Having sung gospel in church since childhood, he accompanied Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Blake, listening to their performances firsthand and learning their repertoire and guitar playing techniques. He made his first recording in 1933. After that, big names like Leroy Carr and Lead Belly chose him as their accompanist, and his versatile musicality led him to support country and jazz records as well. This album contains recordings he made for Folkways between 1944 and 1946. This album showcases his wide-ranging musical talent, featuring not only solo sessions with vocals and piano accompaniment, but also numbers he sang with combos including that of pioneering female jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams (1910-81).
