Artist Information: His grandfather emigrated from Norway to the United States, and Erik Jovag was born in Eugene, Oregon. After earning a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from DePaul University in Chicago, Erik worked as a conductor at the Eugene Opera. He later moved to San Francisco, California, where he worked with various opera companies in the Bay Area and earned a Master of Arts degree in Instrumental Conducting from San Francisco State University. He also worked as a music archivist for over 14 years at the Ira F. Brilliant Beethoven Research Center at San Jose State University. Subsequently, Erik's interest shifted to traditional Norwegian folk music and dance, and since 2015 he has dedicated himself to the Hardingfele, a traditional Norwegian instrument. He studies not only music but also dance related to music. He has traveled to Norway many times to study under Knut Hamura, a leading Hardingfele player, and has participated in numerous Scandinavian music and dance workshops and festivals held in the United States. Currently, Eric serves on the board of the Hardingfele Society in the United States, and in 2024, he co-founded "Tokyo Spelemanslag" with Hardingfele players from all over Japan, and they regularly perform there. This CD features Norwegian folk music played on the Hardingfele, a traditional Norwegian instrument. The Hardingfele is Norway's national instrument and is considered a symbol of Norwegian music, culture, and dance. While there are several traditions for the Hardingfele, this album focuses particularly on the tradition of the Telemark region of Norway.
