With her latest album, 'Ricochet', she has regained her clarity and control, and with a sharper perspective, she once again demonstrates her presence as a leading songwriter of her generation. While her early works depicted the emotional turmoil brought about by youthful love, in 'Ricochet' she deeply confronts time, death, and the fear of watching loved ones quietly slip through your fingers. The 11 tracks on this album are full of introspection, anxiety, and acceptance. It is also about accepting the fact that no matter what is happening on your own little trajectory, the world keeps turning. Written amidst intense personal changes, including a move from New York to North Carolina, "Ricochet" reflects Lindsay Lohan confronting questions she had previously avoided?death and what lies beyond. In this work, her sharp lyricism is layered with more expansive melodies, decorative string arrangements, and hypnotic textures, representing a natural evolution from the balanced guitar work of "Lush" and the raw emotional expression of "Valentine." Sonically, "Ricochet" evokes the glorious aspects of 90s alternative rock: the brightest of The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead at their most Britpop-oriented, and the shoegaze haze reminiscent of Catherine Wheel and Ivy?all reconstructed through Lindsay's unique perspective and voice. Prior to her 2021 Valentine tour, Lindsay Lohan underwent surgery for vocal cord polyps and intensive speech therapy, and on Ricochet, she emerges as a more confident and controlled vocalist. In an album themed on uncertainty, her unwavering vocal ability resonates with an almost ironic strength. The album was recorded at Fidelitorium Recordings in North Carolina and at Nightfly and Studio G in Brooklyn, with producer and bassist Aaron Kobayashi Rich (Mamma, Hotline TNT, Bean Stellar). Reflecting on the production, Lindsay described the sessions as "fresh, trusting, and comfortable." She was able to completely immerse herself in the songs without compromise. This album also marks a major turning point in Lindsay's creative process. "I've never done this before, but this time I first wrote all the instrumental and vocal melodies on piano or guitar, and then spent a year putting the lyrics together," she explains. This change allowed them to carefully craft the expansive melodies that characterize the sound of 'Ricochet'. The album's lyrical world is heavily influenced by art that grapples with "existence itself". Charlie Kaufman's film 'Synecdoche, New York' has a significant presence, and "Nowhere" draws inspiration from Laura Gilpin's poem "The Two-Headed Calf". In "My Maker", he imagines himself hanging out in a heavenly airport bar and pleads, "Oh, bouncer in the sky / Let me in, I'm scared to die". 'Ricochet' also mourns fading friendships, lost simplicity, and the pain brought about by emotional distance. The anxiety depicted here is not about bad things themselves, but about how fleetingly good things can disappear. The album artwork also reflects its theme. 'Ricochet' is Snail Mail's first work without Lindsay's face visible. Floating in a wounded blue space is a single spiral seashell. It juxtaposes two meanings: contraction, collapsing inward, and infinity, expanding outward, symbolizing the struggle between attraction and repulsion brought about by growth, distance, and perspective. 01.
