Approximately six years after his debut album, which won the prestigious Mercury Prize in the UK, Sampha, whose new work has been eagerly awaited for a long time, has finally released his latest album, "LAHAI," on Young Records!
As a singer-songwriter with a unique voice and a producer with undeniable skills, Sampha has garnered support from a host of prominent artists including Kendrick Lamar, Stormzy, Travis Scott, Drake, Solange, Frank Ocean, Beyonc?, and Lil Wayne. His debut album, released in 2017, proudly won the Mercury Prize, awarded in the UK and Ireland for the best album of the year. Now, after a long wait for his new work, he has released his second album, "LAHAI," on Young Records. "LAHAI," which is also Sampha's middle name and taken from his paternal grandfather's name, is a work filled with awe and wonder at our existence, comprehensively expressing the exquisite chaos we experience when we confront the cycle of life and what comes after (death). Composed of 14 tracks, this album features Sampha's close friends and collaborators, including Yeji, Leah Sen, Sheila Maurice Gray (Kokoloco), Ibeyi, Morgan Simpson (Black Midi), Yussef Dayes, Laura Groves, and Quake Bass. Incorporating elements of jazz, soul, hip hop, breaks, jungle, and even West African music, Sampha's exploration of production and vocals reaches new heights. This album is a pursuit of what Sampha calls "beyond-ness," exploring various ways in which we humans try to connect with one another and with something greater than ourselves, while time traveling through generations of people, sounds, and places. If the previous album, "Process," depicted an artist searching for their place in the world while shrouded in the shadows of sadness and loss, then "LAHAI" can be said to be a work that expresses the ultimate acceptance and joy in human existence, and the beauty of the journey itself. In addition, the artwork and new logo for "LAHAI" were created by internationally active creative directors Jonny Lu and Sangfa. The domestic CD release includes bonus tracks "Re-Entry" and "Sensory Nectar," and comes with lyrics translations and liner notes.
