This is their 80th anniversary memorial album. Sonnes de Oriente is a prestigious band formed in 1938, but like many Cuban bands, they have always kept their doors open to young people, rejuvenating their members while advancing both tradition and innovation. Currently, Yuri Riviera Camacho, a cuatro (Cuban double-stringed guitar) player, leads seven talented and individualistic members, who are active in Santiago de Cuba. As the album title "NO TE DEJES QUIRAR EL SON" (Don't Let Son Be Taken Away) suggests, the group's identity lies in son music. In Santiago de Cuba, a city teeming with world-class son bands, they play the most grounded son, exuding the allure of a mature band. This characteristic is clearly evident in this album, recorded in July 2019. The sound, developed through an ensemble of two percussionists, flute, guitar, cuatro, bass, vocals, and guiro & maracas, is thrilling and deeply moving thanks to bold and meticulous arrangements, including rapid rhythm changes, key changes, and constantly shifting choruses. This album features 10 diverse tracks, including four original compositions by leader Yuri Riviera Camacho and guitarist Yoan Casanellas Almenares, all rooted in son but incorporating rumba, guaracha, cumbia, bolero, and changwi. The immersive sound quality perfectly captures the high energy they convey when they perform at their usual venues in Santiago de Cuba. Their melodies and rhythms shower you with a variety of contrasting elements unique to the island nation of Cuba: intricacy and boldness, joy and melancholy, tradition and innovation.
