Featuring Loraine James, Tim Reaper, TSVI, and others. Eden Samara, a prominent figure in London's underground scene, has completed his long-awaited second album, "Odyssey," which boldly traverses jungle, R&B, club music, harp, and chorus. A further expansion of his previous work, "Rough Night," this is a powerful album where intimacy and exhilaration intertwine. Raised in the mountainous region of western Canada, Eden Samara pursued a career in music after composing folk songs and engaging in theatrical activities. He was greatly influenced by the club culture he experienced during a visit to Europe, and moved to London in 2019. Since then, while collaborating with artists such as Parris, Ciel, and Loraine James, he has built a strong presence in London's underground scene with his unique style that freely moves between electronic music, R&B, and pop. Attracting attention from numerous media outlets such as The Guardian, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Crack, and DJ Mag, Eden Samara is one of the artists who cannot be overlooked when discussing the current UK electronic scene. His debut album, "Rough Night," released in 2022 by Local Action, featured top producers such as TSVI, Call Super, and Shanti Celeste, blending eccentric club pop, introspective R&B, and experimental electronic sounds with his unique sensibility. Its striking worldview was highly praised by Dazed and it was selected as one of Mixmag's best albums of the year. The album, which combines bold, dancefloor-rooted sound design with extremely personal songwriting, strongly impressed upon listeners the individuality of Eden Samara as an artist. And now, with his second album, "Odyssey," released approximately four years later, his world has expanded even further and become richer. In this work, while building upon their previous club music and R&B foundations, they boldly introduce new elements such as the exhilarating feel of the jungle, the expansiveness of choruses, and the delicate sound of live harp. The sharpness of the beats and the intimacy of the vocals, the digital texture and the warmth of the live instruments coexist in exquisite balance, and while each song takes on a different character, the album as a whole is a highly accomplished work that sounds like one grand story. As the title "Odyssey" suggests, the inspiration for this work comes from various literary works depicting journeys and self-discovery, including Homer's "Odyssey," "The Alchemist," and "The Picture of Dorian Gray." However, what is depicted here is not merely a fantastical adventure. The sense of loss that arises from witnessing close people facing drug addiction and mental health crises, the codependency lurking behind love, and the process of breaking free from the belief that "you must sacrifice yourself to love someone" are depicted while overlapping with the imagery of a mythical journey. Despite dealing with heavy themes, 'Odyssey' is by no means a stifling work. Rather, its meticulously crafted beats, lustrous vocals, unpredictable developments, and occasional ecstatic moments provide a very physical and liberating listening experience. The album's greatest appeal lies in its simultaneous combination of a delicate sensibility that makes you want to listen carefully to every detail with headphones, and the physicality characteristic of club music. Furthermore, this album features production contributions from prominent figures in current UK electronic music such as Loraine James, Tim Reaper, and TSVI, as well as Ryan Pierre, Comfort Zone, Dan Only, Ryan Clover, and Lightht. Marysia Osu's harp and Fyn Dobson's drums and guitar also add rich depth to the work. In particular, the track featuring Loraine James brilliantly combines the delicate emotional expression shared by both artists with complex electronic production, creating an impressive moment that symbolizes the album. Eden Samara effortlessly traverses jungle, alternative R&B, experimental pop, and UK club music, elevating them not merely as a genre eclecticism, but as a deeply personal narrative. Building upon the talent she demonstrated in her previous work, "Rough Night," this album represents a significant leap forward for her as a songwriter, producer, and vocalist. It's a must-listen for fans of Loraine James, TSVI, Tim Reaper, as well as those listening to sounds from the Local Action circle, and those exploring cutting-edge R&B and experimental pop.
