Kaazi, also known as a member of the progressive percussion trio Asa Tone, is releasing a Japan-exclusive CD of his new album, "Incidental Scenes," a compilation of music he has created for films, documentaries, and short films! Kaazi, whose real name is Izak Jerasimo, is a recording artist, producer, experimental composer/sound designer, and a founding member of the multinational project Asa Tone, along with Melati ESP and Tristan Arp. Based in New York, he has continued to work across various fields, releasing works under his solo name and anonymous projects, producing works by other artists, and creating music for films, documentaries, television, and online campaigns. Asa Tone, in which Kaazi participates, is a project formed in New York by Melati ESP, Tristan Arp, and Kaazi, and gained strong attention with their debut album "Temporary Music," released in 2020 on Leaving Records. Recording in a makeshift studio set up in the Indonesian jungle, and incorporating each member's sense of place and field recordings into their production process, led to their later work "Live at New Forms" and collaborations with Ariel Kalma, shaping a unique musical perspective that transcends rhythm, sound, spatiality, and improvisation. "Incidental Scenes" is a collection of music that Kaazi has created for films, documentaries, and short films. The tracks include music for "After The Flags," which deals with Javanese contemporary artist/activist Arahmaiani, "Beyond Dualism," which focuses on New York artist Futura 2000, and "Anatomy of An Artist," which is based on Yogyakarta-based filmmaker Natasha Tontey. These tracks, assembled by directly receiving the visions of the film directors and closely accompanying the emotions and characters of each scene, resonate not merely as a collection of film scores, but as an independent collection of works born from the intersection of image and sound. Recorded across New York and G Zui studios in Indonesia, this work is composed of richly resonant percussion, deeply immersive synth layers, and pauses that allow emotions to settle in the stillness. Kaazi's music, as is also the case with his work with Asa Tone, uses voice, synthesis, strings, metallophone, and field recordings as materials to intuitively weave together textures of rhythm and resonance, exploring connections with the listener and the subject matter. Furthermore, much of "Incidental Scenes" was created during a period of great personal transformation for Kaazi. He lost several close friends in quick succession, including the death of Ariel Kalma, a key collaborator in recent years. Against the backdrop of this time of loss and reorientation, this work transcends the boundaries of music for film, culminating in a collection of works that quietly embodies a sense of memory, mourning, movement, and introspection.
