Product Description
Content Introduction The new solo album "OPEN CLOSE" by Sam Prekop, frontman of The Sea and Cake, whose pre-release single "LIGHT SHADOW" has been praised by many overseas media outlets including the US "New York Times" and the UK "The Guardian," is set to be released in Japan. The Japanese CD version will also include two bonus tracks. More than 30 years have passed since the debut of The Sea and Cake, and more than 25 years have passed since Sam Prekop's solo career began. This is his first solo album in five years since 2020's "Comma" (THRILL-JP 52 / HEADZ 247), which was inspired by 80s Japanese new age and ambient works and 90s minimal techno masterpieces, released on Thrill Jockey, a prestigious indie label in his hometown of Chicago. This comes after his 2022 duo album with John McEntire, "Sons Of" (THRILL-JP 54 / HEADZ 254), which was selected as Pitchfork's BEST NEW MUSIC, and his solo album "The" released on TAL, a label run by D?sseldorf-based electronic musician Stefan Schneider. Sam is releasing his long-awaited new solo album, his first in approximately three years since "Sparrow." The recording was done by Sam himself, the mixing was handled by John McEntire, Sam's bandmate in The Sea and Cake (who also has a new Tortoise album coming out on International Anthem), and the mastering was handled by Taylor Deupree, the head of 12k, who has earned immense trust in the current ambient scene and is known for his collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, following his work on "Comma." The photograph used on the front cover, as well as the drawings used on the back cover and label, are all by Sam himself, and both are wonderful works. Incorporating the rhythm-focused structure he practiced in "Sons Of," this is Sam's most rhythmic instrumental work (since "Old Punch Card" in 2010, which was mainly made with modular synths), and Sam's essential sense of melody is more refined than ever, resulting in a complex and delicate sound that is more pop-oriented than ever before. Sam Precop will be performing his first ever two-man show with ambient music legend and living legend Laraaji (who will be performing in Japan for the first time in six years in September) in San Francisco, USA on May 31, 2025 (they will be performing solo and collaborative live), and the songs composed for this show are included on this album. ?? Two completely unreleased bonus tracks are included only on the Japanese edition (Taylor Deupree also handled the mastering of the bonus tracks) ??
