This latest album is by Fabiano do Nascimento, a Brazilian/American guitarist, composer, and arranger born in Rio de Janeiro and currently based in Los Angeles and Tokyo. Using multi-string guitars and unique tunings, his music, rooted in traditional Brazilian music such as Afro-samba, folklore, and choro, seamlessly traverses the textures of jazz, experimental music, and electronica, earning him high praise both domestically and internationally. This album features a collaboration with Paulo Santos, a central figure in the iconic Brazilian group UAKTI, which came about through his interaction with Minas Gerais singer-songwriter Jennifer Souza. The spirit of UAKTI, known for creating their own instruments from a variety of materials such as PVC pipes, glass, water, and sponges, and for their collaborations with Paul Simon, Philip Glass, and Milton Nascimento, forms the core of this album. In August 2024, Fabiano and Paulo began recording with producer Leo Marques at Studio Ilha do Corvo in Belo Horizonte. However, at the same time, the largest forest fire in Brazil's history broke out, creating a critical situation with smoke spreading across South America. Within the limited session time, as they said, "the recording started, and we just played freely," the intuition and tension of the moment are directly captured in the music. The second half of the album was produced in Japan. They performed with U-zhaan at a Noh theater in Tokyo, and recorded the performance live. Furthermore, the album includes solo recordings from SALO in Oiso and live recordings from Los Angeles with long-time collaborator percussionist Ricardo ?gTiki?h Pasillas (Salvador), organically connecting different times and spaces?Minas, Tokyo, and Los Angeles?within a single work. Centered around guitar and handmade percussion, the addition of tabla and hybrid percussion creates a unique soundscape full of depth and vitality, despite its minimalist arrangement. The result is an extremely contemporary ensemble work with a high degree of balance between improvisation and structure, simplicity and cutting edge. The album title, "Cavejaz," is a neologism born from the overall feeling, suggested by Sam Gendel, a close friend (who also created the artwork for this album). The image of sounds resonating from the depths of a cave, imbued with water and organic textures, perfectly symbolizes the world of the work.
