More Eaze and Claire Rousey, who have collaborated on various projects over the years, have released their latest collaborative work, 'no floor', from the prestigious Chicago indie label Thrill Jockey Records. While it was only released as an analog record overseas, it will be released on CD exclusively in Japan. Claire Rousey, who released the masterpiece album "sentiment" (THRILL-JP 59 / HEADZ 263) in 2024, traversing ambient/drone and experimental music with indie/emo rock, and was selected as one of the best albums of the year by numerous media outlets, made her long-awaited first visit to Japan to perform at "FESTIVAL de FRUE 2024," and achieved great success with solo performances in Kyoto and Tokyo. Moa Ease, a pseudonym of composer/violinist/multi-instrumentalist Marie Maurice, a collaborator of Claire Rousey for 10 years who has guided her current musical activities, participated in "sentiment" with violin and electronics, and as a remixer on the remix album of "sentiment," "sentiment remix" (THRILL-JP 60 / HEADZ 265). Currently, Claire is based in LA and Mari (More Ease) is based in NY, but previously both were based in San Antonio, Texas (Mari later moved to Austin, Texas). With "an afternoon whine" (Ecstatic) in 2021, they advocated emo ambient music that used everyday sounds while being influenced by R&B and cloud rap, and with "Never Stop Texting Me" (Orange Milk) in 2022, following "an afternoon whine," they incorporated autotune while presenting a sound that also had hyper-pop undertones, demonstrating how they have changed their sound with each release. It's not because Claire had announced that she would be holding "the final sentiment shows" in LA and NY in January 2025, and that these two shows would be her last live singing performances, but this album, "no floor," does not contain any vocal tracks. Unlike their previous works, which featured autotune and hyper-pop sounds, and without making extensive use of field recordings, they have combined their skills as acoustic instrument players, traditional songwriting approaches, and visionary sound designer talents to create an elaborate and intricate sonic world. It is a new kind of Americana, a melancholic collage music that evokes pastoral landscapes. Glitchy electronic sounds ring out with dynamic timbres, and dramatic strings play waves of tension and release. "Limelight, Irregally," released digitally on December 19th last year as the album's first single, is named after the huge San Antonio bar "Limelight," which was used as a live music venue in the mid-2000s, and both artists performed there as teenagers (in a country band and a noise rock band, respectively) (Mari opened for Bill Callahan there when she was 17). "Kinda Tropical," the (melancholy, pastoral) second single released digitally on January 22nd, is named after a queer bar and live music venue in San Antonio that was an essential part of their youth. The album is timeless and highly musical, with beautiful melodies that are impressive, yet stimulating and emotional, reminiscent of label seniors Tortoise and Town & Country (whom Claire particularly respects).
