Synopsis: ?gGrowth is always a solitary journey, filled with challenging expectations, anxieties, immature potential, desires, and closed-off feelings.?h This is the second album from London-based Chinese composer/multi-instrumentalist Li Yilei, whose 2021 release "hV / OF" remains a long-running bestseller, now available exclusively on CD in Japan. This utopian ambient album sonically captures the meditative moment of reincarnation where past self and memories meet the present. The Japanese edition includes one bonus track. This is the second full-length album from London-based Chinese composer and multi-instrumentalist Li Yilei, following his 2021 release "OF," which has been a long-running bestseller and has garnered attention in various places. This new work, which introspectively reflects his childhood journey, brings together samples of old Chinese television programs, mechanical children's toys, and various acoustic and electronic instruments, some of which were designed and made by Li himself. The Chinese title for "NONAGE" is "????," which means "childhood" or "messy hair," and both figuratively and literally refers to the carefree period of a child's life when their hair is down. For Lee, NONAGE is a place he constantly revisits to learn about fear and recklessness, love and despair, sadness and joy, curiosity and mistakes. "I remember pressing the piano keys as if touching a flower, reading sheet music as if looking at a painting, writing as if talking to myself, and facing death as if facing life." Originally conceived as an archival project, the record traces and reimagines parts of Lee's childhood memories through smells, places, and colors, bringing to life the lingering emotions that remain even into adulthood. The tracks are built around a variety of unusual sound sources, including broken instruments such as toy pianos, hand-cranked music boxes, bird whistles, broken accordions, and anything else Lee has found that evokes early memories. Scattered throughout are samples of Li's childhood piano jams, representing a meditative moment of reincarnation where past self and memories meet the present.
