A new album from Fabiano do Nascimento, a Brazilian multi-string guitarist and songwriter currently based in Los Angeles and a close friend of Sam Gendel, is being released on the prestigious Leaving Records. This album, "Das Nuvens," is a superb showcase of vibrant, blissful groove-oriented music from a mature musician, blending traditional Brazilian idioms (samba, choro, etc.) with modern and experimental elements of jazz, pop, and electronic music. Having grown up in Rio and S?o Paulo and moved to Southern California in his teens, Nascimento's approach to guitar and songwriting is influenced by his youth immersed in Brazil's incredibly fertile musical environment. His inclusion in this lineage was inevitable. Growing up in a musical family, young Nascimento read sheet music, played piano, and even dabbled in flute, but at age 10, he picked up the guitar. His affinity for the guitar was immediate, definitive, and clear. His encounter with the guitar further accelerated his decades-long journey through the history of Brazilian classical music. "Das Nuvens" is a free and exploratory work in which a musician who has mastered a clear musical language attempts to apply that technique to broader and more experimental forms of expression. The title of track 1, "Babel," which is centered around a meditative and pointillistic refrain, is derived from the legend of humans attempting to build a tower to heaven. On the surface, it is a harsh parable, but this myth expresses the dizzying array of languages ??(modes of existence) in our world and the beauty of the subsequent cultural exchange through art. In this respect, it is a fitting title to open this album, which deconstructs and collages not only modern and classic Brazilian idioms and pop idioms, but also the diverse indigenous music that Nascimento has encountered and studied during his travels as a touring musician. Recorded in Fabiano's home studio with his longtime friend and collaborator Daniel Santiago (who also handled the album's art design), "Das Nuvens" evokes the vastness of nature (the melancholic "Thrdwrld" sounds like Morricone gently swaying to trap music) and the lush Latin American forests of Nascimento's youth (especially "Aurora"), while simultaneously highlighting the immeasurable universality of music that heals and inspires. The CD release is Japan-only and includes a bonus track: a live recording of the title track from the album's release celebration concert held at Lodge Room in LA on June 23, 2023, featuring Fabiano do Nascimento on guitar, Sam Gendel on saxophone, Gabe Noel on bass, and Tamir Barzilay on drums. Mastering was handled by Matthewdavid.
