Product Description
Content Introduction Doug McCombs of Tortoise releases his first solo album under his full name, Douglas Andrew McCombs. A must-listen for fans of Tortoise's melodic songs and Brokeback's early sound, this is a collection of exciting and beautiful instrumental tracks by a late-blooming major newcomer, accessible even to beginners. Doug, a composer (melody maker) whose hard-boiled and melancholic melodies are reminiscent of masters like Ennio Morricone and Tom Verlaine of Television, a trademark of Tortoise, presents a new presentation in this solo work, a departure from his band-oriented leader unit, Brokeback. The album features guest appearances from John Convertino (drums) of Calexico, who has previously participated in Brokeback's works; Sam Precop (modular sequencing), frontman of The Sea and Cake, with whom Doug now tours; and James Elkington (drums/percussion), former frontman of The Jinx, who is now active as a solo artist and has participated in recent Brokeback albums and live performances as well as Tortoise's 'TNT' re-performance (2020 Japan tour). James Elkington, who has also played on solo albums by Richard Thompson and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, as well as producing for Steve Gunn and recording and mixing for Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier's solo work, also handled the recording and mixing for this album. This album is a culmination of Doug's career in various bands and units, including Tortoise and Brokeback, and it showcases not only the familiar Bass VI (6-string bass) sound but also the expanded possibilities of electric and acoustic guitars, sharpening his unique musicality and further enhancing his signature melodies by exploring texture (sound quality) and paying attention to ambience (sound space), resulting in a masterpiece album. The album title comes from a scan of Doug's passport from his travels in Eastern Europe (where his name was written), and the original release label, the long-established Chicago indie label Thrill Jockey Records, abbreviates it as "V MAK". Thrill Jockey will release it only as a very limited edition CD, but in Japan it will not be limited and will include bonus tracks. This album commemorates the 30th anniversary of Thrill Jockey's founding.
