Dylan Moon's second full-length album, "Option Explore," is a collection of cleverly crafted and colorful tracks that explore the past and present arenas of pop through glass, filtered through frequencies, timbres, and dreams discovered and discarded as the creator moves from subgenre to the next. It marks a major departure from his 2019 debut album "Only the Blues," and at its heart lies a dilapidated folk record in the corners of psychedelia. While somewhat mystical, the underlying logic is ultimately clear, and it generously features independent yet singable songs. His 2020 EP, "Oh No Oh No Oh No," hints at a shift in his songwriting and listening habits, culminating in the 2021 compilation "Moon's Toons Vol. 1." On "Option Explore," Dylan deliberately weaves together a multitude of elements. Through meticulous research into synth-pop, a devotion to distorted yet unwavering guitar grooves, and skillful songwriting, he surrenders to an impossible convergence, reaching something deeply futuristic that disregards the sacredness of genres. The guiding principle of "Option Explore" was the concept of the "exploration/exploitation trade-off," a mechanism of foraging behavior employed in computational neuroscience and psychiatry. He embraces exploratory foraging as a manifesto for his songwriting, spending hundreds of hours on sound arrangements and constructing endless, boundless music. Many of these tracks avoid definitive compositional conventions, sounding more like turning a radio dial than pressing a preset play button. The songs begin as if they started midway and fade out almost without warning, creating a sense of sound dissolving. The striking reproduction of forgotten, nostalgic digital timbres resonates with the pop quality and eccentricity of subsequent revivalists like Television Personalities, Cleaners From Venus, The Clientele, and Cate Le Bon. However, his research-based exploration and reuse of material is imaginative, not simply nostalgia. His process attempts to depict something seemingly impossible, like visualizing colors never before seen; while 'Option Explore' references and draws inspiration from many, it ultimately chooses to explore something entirely new. Having studied electronic music production and sound design in college, he became drawn to the precision of pop music. That purity is condensed and powerfully effective in 'Option Explore'. Dylan is a kind of hyper-literary genre hijacker, incorporating the sophisticated pop aesthetic of Scritti Politti, the textbook chord progressions of Buddy Holly, and the fragmented structure of J Dilla. However, Moon chose not to refine these references into formulaic songs, but rather to reconstruct each fragment as moments that can be unconsciously recognized. 'Option Explore' is an original work in which Moon has digested and edited various elements, and is by no means an imitation of a style. A portion of the proceeds from this album will go to the Downtown Women's Center, the only organization in Los Angeles dedicated to eliminating homelessness for women through housing, health, employment, and support activities.
