Contents: Abbas (formerly of Immortal), the idol of the Norwegian black metal scene, has released his long-awaited third album. A masterpiece that perfectly blends black metal, NWOBHM, and thrash metal! His cover of Metallica's "Trapped Under Ice" is a must-listen. Abbas, everyone's favorite idol of the black metal scene. He formed Immortal with Demonas in '91, and made his album debut the following year with 'Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism'. He was immediately approached by a local TV station with the offer to shoot a promotional video for their morning talk show, which he readily agreed to. But this was a trap. The resulting PV was a complete joke video! At the time, the Norwegian black metal scene was a terrifying world where church arson was actually taking place. Making a joke video would have been instantly fatal. Even the members of Immortal themselves were dejected, thinking their careers were over. But this was a pleasant surprise. The incredibly heartwarming music video captivated the hearts of the general public, and Immortal's popularity exploded. Afterwards, guitarist Demonas suffered from severe tendinitis, so Abbas took on the roles of guitar, bass, and vocals on the three albums "At the Heart of Winter" (1999), "Damned in Black" (2000), and "Sons of Northern Darkness" (2002), showcasing his versatility. Of these, the fifth album, "At the Heart of Winter," is widely considered Immortal's masterpiece. However, in 2003, when they were at the height of their artistic success, Immortal suddenly disbanded. They eventually reformed in 2006 and released an album. Just as fans were relieved, the members became embroiled in a legal battle over ownership of the band name "Immortal." And Abbas left the band to start a new band bearing his own name. Abbas is now releasing his third album, "Dread Reaver." While Immortal was known for its quintessential black metal sound, Abbas, while still rooted in black metal, has incorporated a broader range of musical styles, including NWOBHM. This album, which took two years to produce, is, as expected, fast and evil, extremely masculine and moderately melodic?a truly Abbas-esque album. It's a superb blend of black metal, NWOBHM, and thrash metal in perfect proportions. An interesting track is the cover of Metallica's "Trapped Under Ice." This song, included on the historically significant album "Ride the Lightning," is a hidden gem that Metallica themselves rarely perform live. The choice itself is very understated, but the arrangement is superb, retaining the Metallica feel while infusing it with the Abbas world. If you're an Abbas, Immortal, or black metal fan, or even just a fan of extreme metal, this is an album you can't miss!
