Formed in 1990, they played death metal inspired by bands like Morbid Angel, Carcass, and Paradise Lost. After signing with the prestigious American label Relapse Records, they made their album debut in 1992 with "The Karelian Isthmus." Their second album, "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" (1994), featuring organ and Minimoog, is still talked about today as an eternal masterpiece. Since their third album, "Elegy," in 1996, Amorphis have been influenced by progressive rock bands from their hometown, such as Kingston Wall and Piirpauke, and have boldly incorporated elements of oriental folk music, not just Finnish music. They have grown into a hugely popular band supported by heavy metal and rock fans alike. Since then, they have consistently released high-quality albums at a pace of once every few years. Their 2018 album, "Queen of Time," was a heavy and progressive masterpiece that pleased both old and new Amorphis fans. Now, they are releasing their first new album in three years, "Halo." Guitarist Esa Holopainen says of the album, "It's a typical Amorphis album from beginning to end, but it's a little heavier and more progressive than the last one." On the other hand, vocalist Tomi Joosten says, "There are parts where the arrangements are simpler than on the last album." By making the simple parts even simpler, the big arrangements stand out even more. Heavy, progressive, and at times exotic. Tomi's masterful use of growls and clean vocals is impressive. And of course, it's full of melancholic melodies that are so characteristic of Amorphis. This is a flawless, perfect Amorphis album. The mixing and production are, of course, by Jens Bogren, who knows Amorphis inside and out. The Japanese edition includes a live CD with 10 live tracks!
