Since their formation in 1996, Cattle Decapitation has depicted the destruction and calamities that humans bring to the world, such as environmental pollution, animal slaughter, ecosystem collapse, and global warming, through their ferocious sound, which they themselves call "death metal progressive grind." This direction is maintained in this, their eighth full-length album. Their approach of pursuing aggression from beginning to end remains intact. The lead track, "One Day Closer to the End of the World," was performed live on their North American tour in the summer of 2019, receiving a reaction from the audience that nearly broke their heads. On the other hand, a defining characteristic of this album is its emphasis on overall coherence. Avoiding monotony through sheer brutality, the album features a varied and dynamic development, including narration, dramatically coloring the end of humanity. "Death Atlas," a nine-minute-plus epic depicting the burning of the Earth and the resetting of all life, features guest female vocals from Laure Le Prunenek of Lysine. Vocalist Travis Ryan proudly calls it "the band's masterpiece," a poignant epic of destruction. With Olivier Pienaar of Cryptopsy joining as the new bassist and former tour member Bellisario DiMzio officially becoming a full member, the band's performance has also been strengthened. Together with Josh Elmore's ferocious guitar, they create a violent musical experience. A number of guest musicians who resonated with the band's philosophy participated in this album. While the fact that Phish's John Fishman provides narration for "The Unerasable Past" is a major talking point (he's apparently a huge Cattle Decapitation fan), performances by Void of Silence's Ricardo Conforti and Midnight Odyssey's Dis Pater further intensify the album. The jacket artwork is by Wes Benscotter, who has worked on numerous extreme metal masterpieces for bands like Slayer, Vader, Kreator, and Nile, and has become an indispensable part of Cattle Decapitation's work. The image of the Grim Reaper Atlas with a burning, smoking Earth behind him perfectly visualizes the album's worldview. The band photo in the CD booklet, showing all the members as burnt corpses, is also shocking. Travis says: "I want you to be shocked when you think about your own future, the future of your loved ones, and the pain that the next generation will suffer. Everyone just lives in the 'present' and doesn't think about 'tomorrow.' That's wrong. 'Tomorrow' must not be a check for payment." Death Atlas is a loud warning to humanity heading towards extinction. You cannot close your ears to this roar.
