This EP features a hip-hop producer who has participated in recordings with artists like Drake and AlunaGeorge and has been nominated for a Grammy, a classical/opera composer, a house music DJ, and a singer-songwriter who has collaborated with Riton, Sinead Hartnett, Ray BLK, and others. Their debut EP, "Futures," released in 2016 on B3SCI, a label run by the popular West Coast US blog Blah Blah Blah Science, quickly garnered attention and heavy airplay, racking up over 7 million streams to date. The EP was also released domestically in Japan, and the band even toured the country, generating considerable buzz. Now, PREP presents their third EP, showcasing an evolved sound that builds upon their previous work while becoming even more mellow and stylish. According to vocalist Tom, "If our first EP was Rhodes and our second was synth, this one focuses on the guitar." The album opens with the title track "Line By Line," featuring Cory Wong of LA's next-generation minimal funk band Vulfpeck on lead guitar, and Paul Jackson Jr., a living legend known as the "King of Sessions" who has also supported Michael Jackson and Elton John, on rhythm guitar. The track features light flute and rhythm intertwined with the skillful guitar work of both artists, and impressive high-pitched vocals and chorus. The first single, "Don't Look Back," is particularly mellow, utilizing moody synths, and features soulful vocals from Shownu of Monsta X in the middle, with Se So Neon's So!YoON! adding color to the latter half with bluesy, flavorful guitar and backing vocals. The next track, "Leaning On You," has an uptempo rhythm and unfolds into an anthemic, sing-along style sound. "I Can't Answer That" is a particularly poppy track, a refreshing city-pop song with a funky bassline running over a moderately upbeat beat and Tom's vibrant vocals. The Japanese edition includes bonus tracks: remixes of three songs from the previous EP. The sound is accessible to a wide range of influences, from contemporary indie R&B, neo-soul, AOR, and city-pop, including artists like Honne, Tom Misch, FKJ, Rhye, and Blood Orange. 01.
