The Brisbane lo-fi indie-pop trio, The Goon Sax, who debuted in their teens and have a catalog on the prestigious Wichita label (home to Ride), are releasing their latest album, Mirror II! This is their third album overall and their first since moving to Matador, and they enlisted producers PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding, and more recently, John Parish, who worked on Dry Cleaning's debut album. The album was recorded at Invada Studios in Bristol, owned by Geoff Barrow, known for his work with Portishead and Beak. With each member drawing on a wide range of musical references, including Keiji Haino, Les Rallizes D?nud?s, Kylie Minogue, Young Marble Giants, Stereolab, Justin Bieber, The Walker Brothers, and Syd Barrett, and based on Andy Warhol's philosophy of the mirror, their mutual influence creates a magnificent chemical reaction, resulting in a significant evolution from their previous two albums. The album features 10 tracks, starting with the lead single "In the Stone," where the band members swap instruments and vocalists depending on the song, showcasing the trio's unique minimalist band ensemble, raw adolescent lyrics, and expanded melancholic melodies woven into a Sprechgesang (speaking-like singing). Having passed through 80s neo-acoustic, 90s alternative/shoegaze, 2000s bedroom pop, and 2010s chillwave, this is the latest form of grumpy yet intensely romantic indie pop proudly sung by Generation Z.
