A cute and poppy debut from producer and trackmaker Yeji, who hails from Seoul and New York! In 2017, she released two works, 'Yaeji' and 'EP2', digitally only, which led to her being recognized as one of the most exciting artists in the dance music world. Yeji, a Korean-American female electronic producer/DJ/vocalist/trackmaker who has also remixed tracks for artists such as Charli XCX and Robyn, has signed with XL Recordings and released her first physical work, 'WHAT WE DREW'! The album title, written in both English and Korean and meaning "What We Have Painted," embodies the spirit of the entire project, with "friends, family, gratitude, and support" as its main themes. It was produced over two years in Yeji's Brooklyn design/recording studio, incorporating a wide range of sounds, from Korean indie rock she listened to as a teenager to hip-hop and R&B from the late 90s and early 2000s. The mastering engineer was Heba Kadley, who has also worked on albums by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Slowdive, Deerhunter, Battles, and Bj?rk, and up-and-coming artists belonging to the New York City community where Yeji is active have gathered as guests. In addition to Tokyo-based DJ/producer Yongyong, Oakland-born Brooklyn-based rapper Nappy Nina, Toronto-based Asian drag artist Victoria Singh, and London-based producer Shy Wang are among those who participated. Inspired by typical anime opening scenes, the single "WHAT WE DREW," released in advance with a music video featuring character designs and illustrations by Yeji herself, traverses the space between DIY pop and underground club music. The lyrics, sung in both English and Korean, express a simple sense of happiness about growing up. While this album is largely a product of Yeji's creative vision and self-taught production skills, it also incorporates many elements drawn from her close network of friends and collaborators. The Japanese CD edition includes lyric translations and liner notes, and features one bonus track in addition to the 12 main tracks.
