In the early days of NY punk and new wave, their 3rd album "This Is the Sea" garnered high praise for its musical style that incorporated rock with Celtic folk, Irish traditional music, progressive rock, country, and gospel, fused with Mike Scott's richly literary lyrics. The single "The Whole Of The Moon" is not only one of their signature songs, but has also been covered by Prince and used as the opening song for U2's 2017 world tour, making it one of the rock classics. In 1988, after moving to Ireland, their 4th album, "Fisherman's Blues," which boldly incorporated Irish traditional music, became a huge hit. In the 1990s, Mike Scott mainly focused on his solo career. From the 2000s onward, they concentrated on band activities and energetically toured the world.
