Her second album, her first in about 5 years, is finally complete. This highly anticipated work, featuring Stella Donnelly and Rodrigo Amarante, is finally being released in Japan! Sophia Boldt, whose first album "Waves" (released in 2019, also released in Japan by CA VA? RECORDS / HAYABUSA LANDINGS, the same label as this album) quietly garnered attention in Japan, is a solo project by Am?lie Rousseau, a female singer-songwriter born in Paris and currently living in LA. Until around 2016, she mainly worked in Paris and released several works, but in 2017 she moved to LA and has been waiting for an opportunity in its hybrid music scene swirling with diverse musicians. It was during this time that she released "Waves". This debut album, backed by numerous LA musicians, includes the title track featuring string arrangements by Van Dyke Parks, with whom she began collaborating after moving to LA. Her vocals, exuding an ennui and intellectual aura reminiscent of Jane Birkin, Fran?oise Hardy, Everything But the Girl (Tracey Thorne), Young Marble Giants, or even Stereolab, Portishead, and Broadcast, really stand out. The debut was highly praised by international media such as Pitchfork and The Guardian, and her career has continued to expand, with her being named a favorite of Iggy Pop and composing the soundtrack for Celine's 2020 winter collection, a prestigious high-end brand where Hedi Slimane was the creative director/chief designer at the time. Her songs can also be heard in the Apple TV+ original film "Fingernails" (directed by Christos Nych, with Cate Blanchett as producer), released in 2023. She has also toured with artists such as Sharon Van Etten and Interpol. Following her 5-track EP "Soft Like a Peach" in 2022, this second album has arrived. "Secret Memories," from "Soft Like a Peach," was selected as one of TIME magazine's 10 songs of 2022, and perhaps this high praise from those around her gave her confidence, as this album, co-produced with her longtime collaborator Oliver Hill (Dirty Projectors, Kevin Morby, Vagabon, etc.) and completed at Tropico Beauty Studios in LA, is an even more accelerating work than her previous one, with her melancholic vocals, lyrics that seem to quietly confront the self, and surprisingly lo-fi band sound that delivers a thrilling and stimulating experience. In "Bus Song," a duet with Stella Donnelly, with whom she toured, rough guitar sounds blend with a dreamy mood. "Do You Remember Me?", a collaboration with Brazilian Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos), known for his work with Marisa Monte and Tom Z?, is a mix of tropicalism, psychedelia, free folk, and French pop. The album's final track, "Milk," which utilizes the sound of 1970s VHS tapes, is a beautifully decadent number that wouldn't be out of place on a Velvet Underground & Nico's "Banana" album. The album title, "Vendredi Minuit," means "Friday night midnight" in French. Lost in thought, gently knocking on the door of her heart, she delves into her relationship with time and reflections on the past. It explores empathy, wisdom, temptation, anger, comfort, honesty, and revenge?c From "Better Luck Next Time," which excerpts/quotes a poem by Baudelaire, whom she admires, to "Mahler," which takes the name of a composer who influenced her, and "Love is an Attitude," dedicated to her French grandmother, it's as if she's looking back on her life.
