About 20 years ago he was called a "new generation" drummer, but he continues to be active with a presence that can now be called that of a legendary drummer. Last year he released an album with the unit 44th Move with Alpha Mist, but this is his first solo album in two years since 'Sole Subject'. He has been self-releasing albums until now, but this time it is his first release on a label (Edition Records). Richard Spaven has been at the forefront of jazz, hip-hop, club culture, and drum and bass for nearly 20 years, making him one of the most sought-after drummers. His well-known career has kept him in demand by artists at the forefront of the scene, including Mark de Clive-Law, the early Jos? James Band, Flying Lotus, Cinematic Orchestra, Jordan Rakei, Chris Bowers, Jameszoo, Loyle Carner, Alfa Mist, and many others. His technically advanced playing style, electronic textures, and deep grooves have had a significant influence on the next generation of players, DJs, and trackmakers who freely cross genres. This new album opens up a new emotional depth in his composition, featuring richer harmonies and more melodies than his previous works, and he himself considers it a "new starting point." The band has intentionally broadened its instrumentation and range of instruments, pushing the direction of its previous work, "Sole Subject" (2024), by incorporating horn instruments?trumpet, alto flute, and flugelhorn?into almost every track. The band says that the current instrumentation was influenced by the spiritual jazz aspects of works by artists such as Norman Connors and Phil Ranelin. This album features familiar musicians such as guitarist Stuart McCallum, a close friend and indispensable collaborator on Richard Spaven's albums, and pianist Oli Rockberger, who also appeared as a featured vocalist on Hiromi Uehara's "Sonicwonderland." In addition to them, Norwegian prodigy Nils Petter Molv?r (tp), who always creates innovative sounds by fusing jazz, electronica, rock, and more, joined the band at the suggestion of Edition Records. Other top musicians participating include Swedish bassist Petter Eld, who enjoys unwavering popularity with releases on ECM and other labels, and Finnish trumpeter Verneli Pojola, who overwhelms with his unique sonic world. This is the long-awaited new album from Richard Spaven, a UK drummer/producer/composer/trackmaker who enjoys unwavering popularity and is a key figure in contemporary jazz drumming. While he released an album last year as part of a unit with Alpha Mist, this is his first solo album in two years since 'Sole Subject'. Although he has been self-releasing his music, this is his first release on a label (Edition Records). (C)RS
