Following two consecutive releases on UK's Edition Records, this is their first release since moving to GroundUP, led by Michael League. Kneebody has long been a leading force in the jazz instrumental scene, thanks to the diverse musicality and cutting-edge approach of each member. Since their debut release in 2005, they have consistently released noteworthy works, including "Thin Line" (2013) from Concord, "Kneedelus" (2015) from Brainfeeder, a collaboration with Daedalus from the LA beat scene, a single featuring Inara George (2018), and in recent years, releases from U.K. Edition such as "Chapters" (2019) and "Live at le Crescent" (2022), featuring guests such as Becca Stevens and Gretchen Parlato. The band consists of four members: Ben Wendell, who has gained a wide network and respect in both the LA and NY scenes due to his musical ideas and technical prowess; Nate Wood, a superhuman drummer who has recently participated in Louis Cole's "Quality Over Opinion" and is also active in a group with Will Vinson/Girad Hekselman; Shane Ensley, a trumpeter from the Steve Coleman Band; and Adam Benjamin, a keyboardist. Nate Wood has also been playing bass for several years since KV Rasteger (b) left the band. This album was finally created when the four members were able to reunite in September 2023 after a hiatus due to the pandemic. While previous works have been strongly inclined towards technical challenges, this album takes a softer approach, starting with "Seed Material." Having thoroughly absorbed R&B/rock/hip hop/electronic music throughout their career, this album features a new sense of beat created by its greater simplicity. In recent years, Nate Wood has been playing bass and drums simultaneously, which has allowed for the use of more keyboards and given them new sonic options. Tracks like M1, which develops a melody inspired by Morse code; M3, which stems from their interest in fiddle music; M7, which was conceived with a collaboration with Merrill Garbus of The Tune-Yards in mind (though it never materialized); and M9, dedicated to KV Rasteger, showcase the group's ability to develop minimal material.
