Content Introduction The Agonist, the Canadian extreme metal band that produced Alissa White-Gluz, the current female singer of ARCH ENEMY, has released a new album that evolves their unique sound, which is based on metalcore and incorporates elements of progressive rock, jazz, and classical music! The Agonist, hailing from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is known for having Alissa White-Gluz, the current female singer of ARCH ENEMY, as a member. The band was formed in 2004 by Alissa, Danny Marino [guitar], and Chris Kells [bass, vocals]. Incidentally, Danny is the nephew of Frank Marino, the guitar hero also known as the leader of MAHOGANY RUSH. Initially, the band was called THE TEMPEST, but when they signed with Century Media and released their debut album worldwide, they felt that the band name was too common and that there was another band with the same name, so they changed it to The Agonist. Their debut album, "ONCE ONLY IMAGINED," was released in 2007. Simon Mackay [ds] had joined the band by this point, but due to timing constraints, guest musicians were featured on the album. Regardless, their heavy, aggressive, brutal, yet melodic, catchy, and commercial sound was highly praised in Japan. Alissa's expressive vocals, perfectly switching between screams and clean singing, were also a major draw. In 2009, they released their second album, "LULLABIES FOR THE DORMANT MIND." Evolving from their previous work, "Thank You, Pain," which was made into a music video, became the band's signature song. In February 2010, they made their first visit to Japan, accompanied by HEAD PHONES PRESIDENT. Christian Donaldson, a member of CRYPTOPSY and producer of their first two albums, accompanied them as the second guitarist. In 2012, they released their third album, "PRISONERS," as a five-piece band with Pascal Jobim officially joining as their second guitarist. In November of the same year, they held their second concert in Japan, supported by ALDIOUS. Then, in 2014, Alissa moved to ARCH ENEMY as Angela Gossow's replacement. What happened at that time must be a bitter memory for both Alissa and The Agonist. Alissa lashed out, "I was planning to do both bands at the same time, but the other members (of The Agonist) stole that opportunity from me. I was kicked out." It's easy to understand Alissa's feelings. It was hard to refuse an offer from ARCH ENEMY, one of her favorite bands, and it's true that she had been planning to do both bands at the same time. However, I can understand how the other members of The Agonist felt when they learned indirectly about Alyssa joining Arch Enemy after the completion of "WAR ETERNAL" (Arch Enemy's first album after Alyssa joined, released in 2014). I can also understand their concern that "if we continue like this, The Agonist as a full-time band will be finished. It will just become a side project of the Arch Enemy singer." Since Arch Enemy is bigger than The Agonist, it was somewhat natural that Alyssa would prioritize that. Danny learned about Vicki Sarakis, a female singer from Chicago with Greek parents, through an internet video site. She sang songs by Iron Maiden, Nevermore, and Nightwish, as well as "Thank You, Pain." Danny immediately made contact, but initially, instead of saying, "Alyssa is leaving, so would you like to audition for The Agonist?", he reportedly said, "We're thinking of doing another project, so we'd like to get to know you better." This was because both The Agonist and Arch Enemy were signed to Century Media, and the label had an agreement that "neither would say anything until the time was right." As they played music together and talked, they developed a mutual admiration, and when the time was right, The Agonist officially offered Vicky a position. The announcements of Alyssa joining Arch Enemy and Vicky joining The Agonist came around the same time. Their 4th album, "EYE OF PROVIDENCE," featuring Vicky, was released in 2015. There wasn't a major musical change, and Vicky's vocals were on par with Alyssa's. It's hard to believe that she only seriously started screaming about a year and a half before joining The Agonist. In 2016, they moved to Napalm Records and released their 5th album, "Five." In August 2018, they made their third visit to Japan for a concert. This time, they were co-headliners with Cellar Darling, and other guest bands also performed. And now, their 6th album, "Orphans," has been released. Their sound, which is based on the heaviness and aggression of metalcore, but also incorporates technical developments derived from progressive rock, as well as elements of jazz and classical music, remains intact. There are also songs with a strong authentic HM/HR feel, which have increased since Vicky joined the band. This is an album that suggests further progress can be expected.
