Sacred Reich releases their 5th album, their first in 23 years (!). Formed in 1985, Sacred Reich hails from Arizona. Their "Draining You of Life" demo became a sensation in 1986, leading to a quick signing with Metal Blade. They debuted at a remarkably fast pace, releasing their first album, "Ignorance," in 1987. Their wide range of covers, from Black Sabbath to MDC, demonstrates their broad musical style. While their debut album was mostly comprised of fast tracks, they gradually slowed down their tempo to develop their own unique style. With the 'Surf Nicaragua' EP (1987) and their second album, 'The American Way' (1990), they rose to the forefront of the scene, armed with a post-'Master of Puppets' thrash metal sound, much like other Bay Area bands. Their political lyrics, often focusing on Nicaragua, a battleground in the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union, were also a major characteristic. However, their early fame was short-lived. After releasing 'The American Way', they signed with major label Hollywood Records, but by this time, thrash metal was facing strong headwinds. Thrash was on the verge of being swallowed up by the waves of grunge and death metal. In this environment, most thrash bands were forced to change their style in order to survive. Sacred R?che was no exception. In 1993's "Independent," they slowed down even further, moving closer to groove metal. Their 1996 album "Heal," a return to Metal Blade, unfortunately couldn't withstand the headwinds of the times, and the band disbanded in 2000. However, they reformed in 2006. In 2012, they released "Live at Wacken," a live video recording from Wacken Open Air. It wasn't until 2018 that the desire to create a new album finally emerged. And Sacred Reich, known for their quick work, quickly completed their first new album in 23 years, "Awakening." With a comeback album, the lineup is a point of interest, but there's no need to worry. Phil Lind is naturally on bass and vocals, and lead guitar is played by Wiley Arnett, who has been on every album. And on drums is Dave McClain, who just left Machine Head last year. Dave was originally Sacred Reich's drummer. After participating in their two albums, "Independent" and "Heal," he left the band to join Machine Head, so this is a return for him. Meanwhile, second guitarist Joey Radziville is breathing new life into the band. He's only 22 years old, meaning he wasn't even born when their previous album was released! This album is released by their old label, Metal Blade, and as for the content, as Phil says, it's "a fast and heavy work that pays tribute to the old-school fans who have supported us all this time," and it's a work that is undeniably Sacred-like. It's like a 21st-century version of the masterpiece "The American Way." As the title "Awakening" suggests, their sharp perspective on the problems of modern society remains unchanged. This album makes you feel like you've traveled back in time to the era when thrash metal was no longer just music of demons and initial impulses. The performance by the three seasoned veterans, along with young Joey, whom Phil praises as having "a power saw in his right hand!", is incredibly tight. Phil's vocals have also evolved powerfully, which is impressive. Phil's words, "I hope everyone likes this album. But even if it turns out to be a complete failure, it doesn't matter.
