Ian Gillan joined Deep Purple in 1969 and left behind numerous legends as a member of the second incarnation of Deep Purple, known as their golden age, with albums such as "Deep Purple in Rock" (1970), "Fireball" (1971), "Machine Head" (1972), and "Live in Japan" (1972), which captured their 1972 performance in Japan. After leaving the band, he joined the Ian Gillan Band, Gillan himself, and later Black Sabbath. In 1984, he reformed Deep Purple, and since 1994, with Steve Morse joining the band, they have continued to be very active. Meanwhile, when Deep Purple is on hiatus, Ian also pursues a solo career, releasing five studio albums under his own name and performing numerous live shows. This album, "Contractual Obligation #1: Live in Moscow," captures his Moscow performance on November 15th, 2016, as part of a tour that took him through eight Eastern European countries. Ian is backed by four musicians: Don Airey (keyboards), also from Deep Purple, and members of his band: Simon McBride (guitar), Lawrence Cottle (bass), and John Finnegan (drums). Furthermore, a major highlight of this tour was the collaboration with local orchestras in each country under the direction of conductor Stephen Bentley Crane. The live performance, which opens with "Hang Me Out to Dry" from Ian's solo album "TOOLBOX" (1991), features songs from his solo album, but the majority of the setlist consists of Deep Purple numbers. In addition to classics such as "Strange Woman," "Lazy," "Smoke on the Water," "Hush," and "Black Night," the setlist includes a mix of old and new songs, including works from 2000 onwards. It's also interesting that they cover "Difficult to Cure" by Rainbow, the band Don Airey was formerly a member of. Every song is played in a style similar to Deep Purple, but the strings are played in a way that beautifully colors the songs, resulting in a powerful yet refined performance. The harmonies by Ian's daughter, Grace Gillan, and female singer Amanda Somerville, known for her work with Trillium, are impressive, and a duet between Grace and Ian can be heard on their cover of Lazy Lester's blues number, "You're Gonna Ruin Me Baby." Simon McBride's technical playing, Don's keyboards that carry on the Jon Lord style, and Ian's powerful vocals are all superb, and the performance, which is a little different from the original Deep Purple, is well worth listening to.
