Raven hails from Newcastle, an industrial city in northeastern England. The band was formed a long time ago, back in 1974. Centered around the Gallagher brothers, John (bass, vocals) and Mark (guitar), they also performed as a four-piece with a twin-guitar setup for a period, but in 1979, the trio lineup of John, Mark, and Rob "Wakko" Hunter (drums) was finalized, and in 1980 they debuted with the single "Don't Need Your Money" on the emerging independent label Neat Records. In 1981, they released their debut album, "ROCK UNTIL YOU DROP," which was the first heavy metal album ever released on an independent label. Following that, they released albums such as "WIPED OUT" (1982) and "ALL FOR ONE" (1983). Their aggressive and speedy music made them a prominent part of the emerging New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement in the UK, significantly influencing later thrash/speed metal bands like Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. In 1983, they made their North American debut, touring with Metallica and Anthrax as opening acts. Their "KILL 'EM ALL FOR ONE TOUR," a tour combining the album titles of both bands, is now considered a legendary event in heavy metal history. The double live album "LIVE AT THE INFERNO" (1984) was compiled from recordings made during their first North American tour. Afterward, they moved their base of operations to New York following a deal with major label Atlantic, and produced albums with many commercial elements, such as "STAY HARD" (1985) and "THE PACK IS BACK" (1986). However, they didn't receive sufficient support from Atlantic and lost momentum. With mini-albums like "MAD" (1986) and "LIFE'S A BITCH" (1987), they returned to a fierce heavy metal style, seemingly to vent their frustrations. After "LIFE'S A BITCH," Wakko left the band to become an engineer, and American drummer Joe Hasselvander, who had played with bands like PENTAGRAM and CATHEDRAL, joined the band. In 1988, they signed with Combat, a label specializing in thrash metal, and released the intensely powerful "Nothing Exceds Like Exces." After that, they moved between various labels, releasing albums such as "Architect of Fear" (1991), "Glow" (1994), "Everything Louder" (1997), and "One for All" (1999). In 1995, their long-awaited first performance in Japan, a dream come true for both the band and their fans, took place at Club Citta in Kawasaki, and the performance was released as the live album "Destroy All Monsters ? Live in Japan." They continued to perform live energetically, but in 2001, Mark suffered a broken leg in a wall collapse accident, forcing Raven to suspend activities due to his hospitalization, treatment, and rehabilitation. In 2009, Mark returned to the band after overcoming a serious injury, and Raven made a triumphant comeback with the album "WALK THROUGH FIRE" (released in Japan in 2009, and internationally in 2010). That same year, they embarked on their second tour of Japan. In 2013, they released the documentary DVD "ROCK UNTIL YOU DROP ? A LONG DAYS JOURNEY," which reminisced about the band's history. Not only did the members of Raven appear, but Lars Ulrich of Metallica, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, and David Ellefson of Megadeth also appeared as witnesses, praising Raven's influence and achievements in the heavy metal genre. In 2015, they released their latest studio album to date, "EXTERMINATION," and embarked on their third tour of Japan, demonstrating their unwavering presence as a live band. The live album being released this time was recorded in November 2017 at a venue called "Skraen" in Aalborg, Denmark, and is the band's third full-length live album. It is a powerful production that surpasses not only "DESTROY ALL MONSTERS ? LIVE IN JAPAN," which was recorded when John was suffering from laryngitis, but also "LIVE AT THE INFERNO," recorded in 1983. Incidentally, before that European tour in 2017, Joe suffered a heart attack and was sidelined, and Mike Heller, who had previously played in FEAR FACTORY, joined as a live member. However, in the fall of 2018, Joe retired from his musical career, and Mike became the official drummer.
