Regarding the subject matter of this 20th album, Joe says: "An album that depicts the comedy and tragedy of life. Fear and anger, loneliness and loss. Friendship and laughter in response to them. And music and art itself." From the weighty, ominous "Big Black Cloud" to the early, punk-edged leader track "Fabulously Absolute" and "Alchemy," a unique interpretation of Burt Bacharach's style, Joe's vocals and piano shine throughout. "An album I couldn't have made in 1979. I didn't have enough life experience back then," he says, and the album captivates with its rich flavor and soul amidst the lighthearted beats. What is particularly noteworthy is the raw feeling of this work. In order to package the excitement of the live stage directly into the album, Joe and the band went straight to the studio in Boise, Idaho, the final stop of their 2018 summer North American tour, to record this album. Led by bassist Graham Maybe, his partner since their 1979 debut album "Look Sharp!", Joe Jackson's energy flows in a powerful exchange with Teddy Campel's guitar and Doug Yowell's drums, each elevating the other. With Pat Diretto, who has worked with David Byrne, Ang?lique Kidjo, and They Might Be Giants, as co-producer, this album successfully captures the magic of a live band. The "eight tracks, 40 minutes" selected from the vast number of songs written during tours felt like the perfect "album" length for Joe.
