Content Introduction Soulfly, led by the solitary musical warrior Max Cavalera, has released their 11th album, "Ritual"! Inheriting the heavy and dark sound of their previous album, "Archangel," this masterpiece confidently shines a spotlight on both their thrash/death metal and Brazilian music roots! Soulfly was formed in 1997 by Max Cavalera (vocals, guitar) after he left Sepultura, a leading force in the Brazilian metal scene. Their debut album, "SOULFLY," released in 1998, quickly propelled them to the forefront of the metal scene with their original sound, a fusion of thrash/hardcore metal and Brazilian folk music, just like during their time with Sepultura. Soulfly participated in the 1998 OZZFEST US tour, sharing the main stage with Ozzy Osbourne, Megadeth, and Tool (the UK version featured Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera, Slayer, and Foo Fighters). Soulfly quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the metal scene after the release of their debut album, and made their first visit to Japan in February 1999. All of their shows were almost completely sold out and have since become legendary. After several member changes, Soulfly, led by Max, released albums such as "PRIMITIVE" (2000), "3" (2002), "PROPHECY" (2004), "DARK AGES" (2005), "CONQUER" (2008), "OMEN" (2010), "ENSLAVED" (2012), "SAVAGES" (2013), and "ARCHANGEL" (2015). Furthermore, from "PROPHECY," Mark Rizzo (formerly of ILL NINO), who is now Max's right-hand man and possesses a wide range of musical backgrounds from heavy metal to Spanish music, joined the band, including in the project CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, which is a collaboration between Max and his younger brother Igor. In addition, Zion, Max's real son, joined as the drummer from "SAVAGES." Shortly after the completion of "Archangel," bassist Tony Campos left the band (Tony later joined FEAR FACTORY), and his replacement was Mike Leon, who had been active in bands such as HAVOK and THE ABSENCE, and had already worked with Max as a live performer for CAVALERA CONSPIRACY. For their latest album, "Ritual," their third release since signing with Nuclear Blast, they began writing songs in earnest after touring with "Archangel." They then enlisted Josh Wilbur, known for his work as a producer and mixer on albums by MEGADETH, LAMB OF GOD, TRIVIUM, ALL THAT REMAINS, GOJIRA, CROWBAR, and Max's side project KILLER BE KILLED, to produce the album, and completed the recording. The classical artwork, reminiscent of medieval religious paintings, was created by Israeli painter Elilan Kantor, who also worked on their previous album, "Archangel." Elilan is a renowned artist known for his work with TESTAMENT, HATEBREED, ICED EARTH, SODOM, and others. As usual, many guest musicians participated in the recording of this new album, with Randy Blythe of Lamb of God, Ross Dolan of Immolation, and Max's real son Igor A. Cavalera providing vocals, and a flutist and several percussionists joining in on some tracks. Part 11 of "Soulfly," which is part of the customary instrumental series and closes out the main body of the album, features a saxophonist, adding a mystical and profound sound reminiscent of later King Crimson to the acoustically rich track. "Feedback!" is a simple and straightforward punk blues metal tune for Soulfly, and it exudes a great sense of speed that inherits the style of the now-defunct Mot?rhead. Soulfly began a tour in Europe in July, just before the release of their masterful new album "Ritual," and the heavy music in each location. In addition to performing at metal festivals, they are also scheduled to headline shows with support from bands such as Dying Fetus and Toxic Holocaust.
