Corrosion of Conformity is an American heavy metal band that started out as a hardcore band in 1982. After crossing over with thrash metal, their sound evolved into heavy rock and stoner rock, and now their new album is being released. Corrosion of Conformity was formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1982. The current lineup consists of Woody Weatherman (guitar), Mike Dean (bass/left in 1986 but rejoined 6 years later), Reed Mullin (drums/left in 2001 but rejoined 9 years later), and Pepper Keenan (guitar & vocals/left in 2006 and rejoined in 2014), who joined in 1989. They released "Eye for an Eye" in 1984. After releasing "Animosity" in 1985 and "Technocracy" in 1987, they transformed into a top-tier band in the genre later known as "crossover," adding heavy metallic riffs to the raw energy of hardcore. With the addition of Pepper Keenan in 1989, they shifted to a heavier rock style. Their third album, "Blind" (1991), which emphasized heaviness, was well-received, and their fourth album, "Deliverance" (1994), which further strengthened their stoner rock sound, sold over 400,000 copies in the US, making them a popular band overnight. Their subsequent fifth album, "Wiseblood," garnered attention with guest backing vocals from James Hetfield of Metallica, reaching number 104 on the US charts. They also gained popularity in Europe, reaching number 39 in Finland and number 43 in Sweden. Incidentally, Pepper played guitar and sang the second verse on Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone," which is included on the Metallica cover album "Garage Inc." In 1997, they made their first visit to Japan, thrilling audiences alongside the Japanese metal band OUTRAGE. After releasing albums such as "America's Volume Dealer" (2000) and "In the Arms of God" (2005), Pepper left the band in 2006 to focus on his work with DOWN, a supergroup centered around former Pantera member Phil Anselmo. Corrosion of Conformity then ceased activities. In 2012, the band reunited with the trio lineup from the "Animosity" era and released their 8th album, "Corrosion of Conformity." Pepper participated in one track on their next album, "IX" (2014). And now, with the release of "No Cross No Crown," he has made a full comeback. "No Cross No Crown," their third album since the reunion and tenth overall, is a powerful work that seems to declare the band's complete resurgence. With Pepper's return to the band, they have reorganized into the lineup from the masterpiece "Deliverance" era. With its heavy sound that blends elements of hardcore with Southern rock, while also incorporating elements of 1970s Black Sabbath-esque hard rock, it's unmistakably the sound of Corrosion of Conformity. Prior to the release of this album, "No Cross No Crown," they are scheduled to embark on a large-scale North American tour in collaboration with Black Label Society, starting with a performance in Denver, Colorado on December 27, 2018, and continuing until a performance in Los Angeles on February 27 of the following year. They are also scheduled to perform at Hellfest this June, so it can be said that Corrosion of Conformity has raised the banner of their resurgence with this substantial new work.
