The Japan edition includes two remixes by Takeshi Ueda of AA= and a demo take from 1998 as bonus tracks! Sinsaenum is back. Sinsaenum is a superstar death metal band centered around Fr?d?ric Leclerc of DragonForce and Joey Jordison, currently of Vimic and formerly of Slipknot. Their 2016 debut album "Echoes of the Tortured" surprised many fans with its old-school death metal reminiscent of the early 90s, which was nothing like DragonForce. In short, this band has an incredibly gorgeous lineup of members. In addition to the two mentioned above, the band features vocals by Attila Chihar of Mayhem and Sean Z of Doss, guitar by St?phane B?lier of Loudblast, and bass by Haimott of Seto. You can see that this lineup is not an exaggeration to call them a superstar band. On the other hand, because they are a superstar band, all the members are extremely busy. So, many people were probably worried that Sinsaenum's activities would be limited to just one project, "Echoes of the Tortured." But Sinsaenum is back! The release this time is an EP called "Ashes." However, the Japanese version contains a total of nine tracks and is 40 minutes long, almost the length of a full album. The overseas version includes six tracks: three brand new songs, a remix version of "Dead Souls" (from "Echoes of the Tortured"), and "Degeneration" and "King of the Desperate Lands" (both included as bonus tracks on the Japanese edition of "Echoes of the Tortured"). The Japanese version adds three more bonus tracks. First, there are remix versions of "Army of Chaos" and "Condemned to Suffer" (both from "Echoes of the Tortured") by Takeshi Ueda (AA= / THE MAD CAPSULE MARKETS). And there's even a 1998 (!) demo take of "King of the Desperate Lands"! Frederick's words, "This work clarifies Sinsaynham's identity," perfectly describe this EP. In this work, the Morbid Angel influence that was prominent in their debut album has faded, and an originality that can only be described as Sinsaenum has been firmly established. First of all, the overall darkness and eeriness have increased, and the black metal atmosphere is more pronounced, which is also clearly reflected in Maxime Taccardi's album artwork. On the other hand, Frederick's jazz/fusion guitar solo approach in "Alan Holdsworth Tribute" creates a magnificent contrast with that darkness. The pursuit of a rough sound quality that is not too clean, particularly in the drums, has also paid off, and the overall power has doubled compared to their debut album. While their debut work had a nostalgic aspect that introduced the good of the 90s to recent fans, with this EP, Sinsaenum can be said to have definitely started walking towards the future. The Japanese bonus track is also interesting. The meaning of "remix" is different between the "remix" of "Dead Souls" and the "remix" by Ueda. The former is a "remix" that simply changes the balance between instruments and the sound quality, essentially redoing the mix, whereas the latter is a "remix" that involves adding new instruments and changing the song structure. Ueda has introduced programmed drums, digital sequences, and even Vocaloid into the 100% pure death metal track from "Echoes of the Tortured," resulting in a playful remix. Frederic and Ueda met through a magazine interview, which led to this collaboration. Furthermore, a 1998 demo of "King of the Desperate Lands" from Frederic's personal archives is a must-listen. Of course, since it's a personally made demo, the drums are programmed and the sound quality is lo-fi, but here you can fully enjoy Frederic's black metal-style vocals!
