Content Introduction British progressive rock travels into the 21st century! Anathema's 11th album, "The Optimist," is set for release! Based on the jacket photo from their 2001 album "A Fine Day To Exit," this new album, depicting the journey of an "optimist," is a sonic road movie! Formed in 1990, Anathema has become a standard-bearer of modern British progressive rock. They made their first visit to Japan in August-September 2015, captivating audiences with a stage where light and shadow, heaviness and ambience intersected. Now, after a three-year hiatus, their 11th studio album creates an even more evolved sonic world. This work, which inherits the worldview of their 2001 album "A Fine Day To Exit," is what Daniel Kavanagh (guitar/piano/vocals/loops) calls "semi-autobiographical." The band projects their lives and feelings onto "The Optimist," embarking on a journey through a new mental landscape. As the scenery shifts from the beaches of Silverstrand, California, to San Francisco and Springfield, the listener is drawn into their own inner world through this album. The band's music colors the turbulent journey of "The Optimist." The journey begins with "Leaving It Behind," where cool programming and passionate rock contrast, and continues through "The Optimist," which builds dramatically from piano melodies, "San Francisco," which could be called minimal metal, and "Ghosts," which crosses the beautiful boundary between dreams and reality, before culminating in the expansive "Back to the Start," and finally returning to its origins. The album's sound gains further depth thanks to the involvement of producer Tony Dugan, who has worked with Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, and Super Furry Animals, and recording sessions held in Donegal, Ireland and Glasgow, Scotland. Travis Smith, who created the artwork for "A Fine Day to Exit," once again contributed to the album's jacket and booklet art, using photographs he took on the American West Coast, visually representing the soundscape of "The Optimist." The organic performances, recorded in a more live-like manner, and the songs that venture into a deeper spiritual realm, create a majestic sense of exhilaration. This true progressive music, constantly moving forward, possesses both the color of optimism and the shadow of pessimism.
