[Japanese liner notes included] Norwegian band Mysticum, known as pioneers of industrial black metal, have released their second album, "Planet Satan," after 18 years. They are also known for a demo they made in 1993 before their debut, which was recognized by the late Euronymous of Mayhem. After a period of hiatus, they resumed activities with the same members about two years ago. In "Planet Satan," they develop a tense black metal sound that is even more destructive while maintaining the direction of their debut, and it is the strongest album that heralds their full-fledged comeback. Mysticum was formed in Norway in 1992 under the name Sabajios by three members: Kerastes [Hell General Kerastes] (G/VO.), Prime Evil [Svartravan] (G/VO.), and Mean Malmberg [Dr Best] (B/SYNTH/PROG). They pioneered a new style of black metal that built rhythms through programming without a drummer. In 1993, they changed their name to Mysticum and produced a demo that caught the attention of Euronymous of Mayhem, leading to a contract with his label, Deathlike Silence Productions (DSP). The release of their debut album, "Where the Raven Files," was announced. However, shortly afterward, Euronymous was murdered by Varg Vikenes of the Norwegian black metal band Burzum. The label was closed, and Mysticum's album debut fell through. Afterwards, they produced new demos, signed with Full Moon Productions, and began recording their first full-length album again. The album was not titled "Where the Raven Files" as originally planned, but was released in 1996 under the title "In the Streams of Inferno." Following the success of their European tour in support of this album, they also toured the United States with bands like Cannibal Corpse. However, their activities became intermittent after that, and in 2004 they released "Lost Masters of the Universe," a compilation of demos and EPs they had produced up to that point, before going on hiatus. However, in 2012, the members reunited and began creating new music, signing with Peaceville Records. Now, they have completed their second album, "Planet Satan," 18 years after their last release. The original industrial-style black metal that Euronymous himself acknowledged remains intact, and the album is a fitting start to the band's second chapter.
