Contents 80 years after the war --- Presented with utmost respect by 80-year-old Akira Sakata. More than half a century has passed since he joined the Yosuke Yamashita Trio in 1972, and this year, at 80 years old, Akira Sakata continues to be active globally. His new band, "Akira Sakata SOS," follows the formation and dissolution of various groups. The members are Akira Sakata, a leading figure in free jazz; Nana Omori, a pianist whose work intersects with free jazz and contemporary music; and Manabu Sakata (Akira Sakata's son), a drummer who works without borders from pop to jazz. The three first performed together in 2017, and later started activities as "Akira Sakata COCODA" with Shinobu Kawai (bass). In 2023, they released the CD "Kareta Himawari" (Withered Sunflower), which was well received. They also started activities as a trio from their Hokkaido tour in 2024. In 2025, the band was named Sakata Akira SOS, and they have participated in festivals such as Earth Day and Haru Ichiban. In June, they embarked on a tour of six locations: Kure, Tokushima, Okayama, Onomichi, Shimane, and Hiroshima. In addition to long-time fans, they have received positive feedback from people of all ages who had no prior experience with free jazz (including expressions of surprise and laughter). On August 15, 2025, Sakata Akira SOS released their 1st album, "In a Sentimental Mood." The mixing and mastering were done by Jim O'Rourke. Sakata says that he wants people to "just watch their unpredictable performances like they're looking at the scenery from a car window." We highly recommend you check out the sound of SOS.
