Boz Scaggs, who had been drawn to soul and blues from the beginning of his career, traveled to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, for his fourth solo album, following his 1969 release, and recorded with local masters. This was his first album where he produced all the tracks himself, and while he also recorded in San Francisco with his familiar band, he revealed his musical roots by performing covers of Al Green's song from the same year and a New Orleans R&B classic written by Allen Toussaint.
